Blurb: Murder Mystery Boxes!

Last Modified at — Oct 16, 2021

So pip got a great birthday gift which was right on theme with our recent Castle binge. It’s called “Death at the Dive Bar” from “Hunt a Killer”, which also runs a subscription service. Your team/you (going solo) take on the role of a private investigator, and need to solve a murder mystery for a client. For this one, we were given a box of clues and evidence collected by the client. It’s rich with background dossiers, and quite realistic pieces of evidence: pictures of footprints, security cam footage still, etc.

It was a fun few hours, all of us sitting together and discussing the case and trying to break ciphers. There’s something about sifting through actual physical evidence that made it very real and pulled us in. We didn’t have a murder-board (this time) so the coffee table became our PI desk. While there is the downside of the game/box not having any replay value, it would be a cool gift to give somebody else who hasn’t solved it! I should keep an eye out for stuff like this to make game night more fun, while thinking of ways to extend its shelf life – how would I change things if it was more fluid with a Dungeonmaster? This particular one was marked ’easy’, but it was good fun nonetheless. Highly recommend.
